The concept visualizes the central tension of the lecture: How can inner-city housing make the best possible use of space while still giving shape to ideals for society?

Urban housing has always been about optimizing limited space. Yet housing design also reflects ideas of how people should live together. As far-reaching optimization increasingly dominates, it comes into conflict with these ideals.

The three-dimensional typographic cubes reference architectural volumes, living spaces, and urban housing. Optimization and idealism occupy different faces of the same structures, emphasizing the tension between these two interconnected aspects of housing design.

The typography is stretched and compressed to make the best possible use of the available surfaces, translating the principle of spatial optimization into a visual language. Together, the cubes represent the tension and possible balance between optimization and idealism in urban housing.
